Sandra Semchuk

Sandra Semchuk is a Ukrainian Canadian photographer and video artist who works across generations, cultures and species. In her book, The Stories Were Not Told, Canada’s First World War Internment Camps, Semchuk uses memory work and photography to create a space for internees and their descendants to tell their stories. As a partner in Treaty 6 and widow of co-collaborator, the late Cree orator, James Nicholas, Semchuk uses dialogue to disrupt myths that have shaped settler relations to First Nations. She incorporates lenticular imagery, 3D, vocables, overtone singing and performance to converse across constructed boundaries.
