Towards Braiding workshop 2
Facilitated by Sandra Semchuk and Elwood Jimmy
Come learn more about and participate in the practices of Sandra Semchuk. Sandra will talk about her work, as well as lead participants in vocables and overtone singing and performance that gestures towards conversing across constructed boundaries. Sandra Semchuk is a 2018 recipient of the Governor General’s Award in Visual and Media Arts. She is a Ukrainian Canadian photographer and video artist who works across generations, cultures and species. In her book, The Stories Were Not Told, Canada’s First World War Internment Camps, Semchuk uses memory work and photography to create a space for internees and their descendants to tell their stories. As a partner in Treaty 6 and widow of co-collaborator, the late Cree orator, James Nicholas, Semchuk uses dialogue to disrupt myths that have shaped settler relations to First Nations.
