The Guelph Lecture—On Being 2024

Friday, May 3, 2024; 7:00 pm - 10:00 pm
Speaker & Performance

The latest edition of The Guelph Lecture—On Being will challenge the way we orient ourselves to the environment and to each other through stories, ideas, performance and song.

The keynote lecture will be delivered by filmmaker, writer, and educator Nora Bateson. We often hear that our world is becoming more complex and volatile as multiple crises converge: the climate crisis, the water crisis, geopolitical crises, migration crises, and crises of political illiberalism. Nora Bateson will talk about the concept of Warm Data, which offers a lens through which to see how multiple converging contexts have led to a moment of “metacrisis.” Warm Data functions as a form of therapy in which we can understand more completely the multiple contexts in which we live…and what we can do about it.

Following the keynote, performance art band Ikumagialiit will take the stage, featuring award-winning artists Christine Tootoo, Cris Derksen and Laakkuluk Williamson Bathory. Join them in their journey to the depths to discover something wrong in the centre of the earth. They use a combination of natural elements and technology to explore Inuit spiritual methods and dig deep.

The River Run Centre is a physically accessible venue. This event will feature live transcription and ASL interpretation. For details on the festival’s accessibility, please visit our general accessibility page.
